Details

I am a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania, and I am Board Certified in Clinical Psychology.  I have been a Professor in the doctoral program in clinical psychology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine for the past 22 years, and prior to that, I was in clinical practice as Director of Psychology at the Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center of Philadelphia and senior psychologist at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health. I retired from full-time faculty at PCOM in 2021, and now concentrate on my part-time private practice.

I was trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy by Dr. Art Freeman at Aaron T. Beck's Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania, and I later worked with Dr. David D. Burns, MD, author of Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy, the Feeling Good Handbook, and others. In 1999, I was hired to the faculty at PCOM by Dr. Freeman, where I taught classes in clinical supervision, seminars in behavioral health, and supervised students in our on-campus clinic, as well as serving at Director of Clinical Training. Some of our students went on to work with Dr. Perlis as advanced practicum students at the University of Pennsylvania at the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program in the Department of Psychiatry.  I have participated in trainings in CBTi and I have successfully worked with patients with sleep disorders and related problems by using evidence-based protocols and methods such as those authored by Dr. Perlis.

My interpersonal style is down-to earth.  I consider myself to be especially skilled at translating the principles and methods of evidence-based practice to meet the needs of each of my individual patients. I value the power of working together, as I am the "expert" in the use of evidence-based practices including CBTi, while my patients are the experts on themselves. When we combine those two areas of expertise in the context of an empathetic and respectful therapeutic relationship, we work in tandem to accomplish patient goals. In addition to using CBTi, I also use Motivational Interviewing and principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help guide my patients in developing a healthy commitment to making import changes in lifestyle that, no matter how small, can have a significant impact on physical and emotional health and quality of life.

My practice is located in suburban Philadelphia, and I also participate in virtual care through a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform. I am also approved by the American Psychological Association PSYPACT to practice secure telepsychology in AZ, CO, DE, DC, GA, IL, MD, MO, NE, NH, NV, NC, OK, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA and WV. I am an out-of-network provider and do not take direct assignment via commercial insurance. I am happy to discuss my fees.
